Ange Postecoglou Unhappy with ‘Wasteful’ Tottenham Despite Fulham Win and Record Start

Tottenham Hotspur returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Fulham, but Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was not happy with his side’s performance.

Heung-Min Son and James Maddison scored on the stroke of halftime as Spurs continued their unbeaten start to the league season. The result took them above Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of the table, but despite the victory, zero goals conceded and a ninth unbeaten league game, Postecoglou does not believe his side are at their best.

“Obviously it’s a good result,” Postecoglou said.” Fulham are a difficult team to break down. I thought we handled the first half well and were calm. We had a lot of chances and maybe we should have scored another goal or three.

“The second half wasn’t good for us. We didn’t play as well as we should have with the ball. Without the ball our pressing was still excellent, but with the ball we were really, really wasteful.

“I said before the game that we’ve been very consistent this year and this was probably our worst 45 minutes with the ball.

“We still have a lot of work to do.”

Postecoglou has guided Spurs to their best start to a season since they won the First Division title in 1960/61. He also became the first manager in Premier League history to win 23 points from his first nine games in charge.

However, Postecoglou was unhappy with Tottenham’s second-half performance against Fulham, despite Maddison scoring early to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.

“It was a combination of things,” the Australian replied when asked what he wasn’t happy with.

“I thought we were a little bit wasteful, a little bit static and we didn’t move as much as we did in the first half.

“You have to respect the game. If you stray a little bit, I’ve been in this business long enough to know it can drag you down very quickly. We didn’t really stick to the soccer we wanted to play in terms of movement and possession.

“We were a bit casual in the game and I wasn’t happy with that.

Tottenham will be away to Crystal Palace on Friday night.
